The second grade has implemented a new homework assignment. It's writing reflections on their reading (which they are supposed to do for 15 minutes a night). The reading, I don't mind. We usually read right before bed, and usually more than 15 minutes. Allison gets in her bed with 5 books. Jacob gets in our bed and reads to/with us. We all wind down and get ready to go to sleep, which begins immediately upon completing the reading.
You can see how this structure is not conducive to adding a writing reflection - especially if your child is an avowed writing "hater." Just read last year's school suspension post... So this new assignment has "upped" the homework requirement from math and reading - to math, reading, and writing each night; which I argue is excessive for a 7-yr old. (Seriously - what do they do in the 8 hours they are at school!!)
Then I have to completely redo our evening schedule to accommodate the extra 30 minutes it takes him to write a paragraph reflection on something he read. That would be 30 minutes of head-butting; arguing; stalling; curse-inducing reflecting.
